The Digital Development Dialogue (3D) seminar explores the gap between the promises and realities of global carbon markets focusing in particular on REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects within the voluntary carbon market. While nature-based solutions, particularly conservation projects under REDD+, constitute a significant share of carbon credits, their effectiveness and social impact have been widely debated.

Am 17. Februar 2025 hatte das GIGA einen „GIGA Talk“ in unserem Büro in Berlin geplant, um einen aktuellen Bericht des Quincy-Instituts über die Aussichten des Multilateralismus in einer Welt konkurrierender Ordnungsnarrative zu diskutieren. In einer Zeit wachsender Machtrivalität und schwindenden Zusammenhalts internationaler Institutionen ist dieses Thema für die zahlreichen Konflikte im Nahen Osten und Nordafrika und die Zukunft der Region von großer Bedeutung.

Die Proteste gegen das Programm haben uns gezwungen, die Veranstaltung zu verschieben, da wir uns nicht in der Lage sehen, die Sicherheit der Veranstaltung und der Podiumsteilnehmer:innen zu gewährleisten. Wir beabsichtigen, die relevanten Themen des Berichts bei einer unserer nächsten Veranstaltungen zu diskutieren.

Wir teilen die Besorgnis vieler Kritiker:innen über die autoritäre Regierung im Iran und ihre Rolle in der Region, aber weder die Rolle des Iran noch die eines anderen Landes war das Thema dieser Veranstaltung. Wir freuen uns darauf, diese wichtigen Diskussionen zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt zu führen.
