Contested Conflicts: Diverse Perspectives on Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine, and Beyond

  • Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine: contemporary conflicts dominate headlines across the German and European media landscape, yet global perspectives on these crises are still largely shaped by Western voices. From the war in Ukraine and Middle Eastern geopolitics to security challenges in Africa – how do scholars, policymakers, and ordinary citizens across the Global South understand these events?

This panel brings together policymakers and experts on Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East to discuss analytical perspectives that are often missing from European debates. The discussion will explore how historical experiences of colonialism, regional power dynamics, and differing strategic priorities shape how conflicts are perceived, interpreted, and addressed in respective Global South countries. The panel will also consider what these insights mean for German foreign policy – for ambitions to engage on equal terms, and for avoiding misunderstandings and misplaced expectations.

Speakers:  Prof. (em.) Dr. Detlef Nolte is an Associate at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Detlef Nolte works on Latin American politics, foreign policies, regionalism as well as EU–Latin America relations.

Dr. Mona Saleh works at the University of Duisburg-Essen and at the GIGA Institute for African Studies as an Associate. Mona Saleh works on international and regional organisations, especially the African Union and the League of Arab States.

Leo Wigger is a Research Associate at the Candid Foundation. Leo Wigger specialises in the regional affairs of South and Central Asia.

Dr. Thomas Henzschel is Head of Division 300: Cross-Regional Issues Africa, Latin America and Near/Middle East at the Federal Foreign Office.

Moderator:  Olena Osypenkova is a Doctoral Researcher at the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies.
