This study examines how global governance institutions led by emerging powers cope with legitimacy challenges under multipolarity through a qualitative case study of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, based on an original dataset of global elite media coverage, expert interviews, and official documents.

I critically examine how three leading Chinese IR theories—Moral Realism, Relational Theory, and Tianxia System—relate to the concept of ‘good international citizenship’ (GIC), arguing that they do not offer a fundamentally different vision of world politics or states’ conduct from the perspective of GIC.

It has been over a decade since the emergence of what is now best known as the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI). This Special Issue highlights the immense complexity not only of the idea itself but also of China’s global influence and the varied attitudes and responses towards it.

This essay explores the social context anticipating the intensified effort to assimilate China’s vast ethnic minority population under Xi Jinping by tracing the debate among prominent university professors, government-affiliated researchers, and high-ranking officials over China’s ethnic policy between 2004 and 2015.

In this talk, I explore how we should continue the task of decolonizing knowledge production without surrendering the possibility of critically engaging with those alternative visions that could be instrumentalized to support problematic practices and ideas of non-Western actors, such as China.

This talk unpacks the challenges of sustaining a dual critique: provincializing Europe without naturalizing China; pluralizing knowledge without abandoning critical evaluation; and resisting epistemic hierarchy without collapsing into civilizational particularism.
