What’s Important at the 2026 Munich Security Conference

“The world has entered a phase of wrecking ball politics,” says the Munich Security Report 2026. This year’s Munich Security Conference (MSC) will also be held under the theme “Under Destruction”. Three topics will be in the spotlight in Munich from 13–15 February.

    1. The security situation in Europe remains tense, given Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the reduced commitment of the US to European security. The MSC 2026 will address questions concerning the security policy capabilities of European states. In this context, GIGA experts Prof. Dr. Christian von Soest, Dr. Julia Grauvogel, and Jun.-Prof. Dr. Hana Attia analyse the impact and consequences of sanctions policy.

    2. China is expanding its influence in the Indo-Pacific, while the future role of the US remains unclear. This is leading to increased armament and power shifts in the region. At the GIGA, Prof. Dr. Patrick Köllner and Dr. Julia Gurol-Haller are tracking developments and analysing their geopolitical implications.

    3. Security policy is not the only factor putting pressure on international order. Trade, development cooperation, and humanitarian aid are also coming under increasing pressure. At the MSC 2026, discussions will focus on limiting the consequences of destructive policies and strengthening reforms and new partnerships instead.

GIGA expert Prof. Dr. Miriam Prys-Hansen says: “It will be crucial to work with the Global South and other partners to develop strategies to preserve those aspects of the international order that are essential for global cooperation – from sustainable development and climate protection to human rights and stable trade relations. If the US and other key players are willing to abandon these elements, the question arises of how global public goods can be provided during this transition phase. This requires a group of states that are willing to take responsibility and fill the gaps that have emerged.”

We have compiled analyses and background information by our experts on the key topics of the MSC 2026 for you here.
