Management and Boards


  • The GIGA is headed by the president, who is assisted by the executive board. The research council develops the institute’s research direction. Management responsibilities are comprehensively defined in the GIGA’s charter.

    President

    Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar is President of the GIGA and Professor of International Relations at the University of Hamburg. She also is Honorary Fellow of Darwin College (University of Cambridge) and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

    Executive Board

    The executive board consists of the president, the vice president, the directors of the regional institutes, and the managing director.

    This body strategically guides the entire institute, coordinates the GIGA’s work and advises on the allocation of financial resources. The executive board is also responsible for all matters concerning human resources development and is assisted therein by the Equal Opportunities Officers.

    Research Council

    The research council advises on the institute’s research direction, discusses theme development and works out the research plan. It assists the executive board in research and personnel strategies.

    The research council is composed of the president, the vice president, the directors of the regional institutes, the heads of the research programmes, the research manager and the academic director of the GIGA Doctoral Programme.




    External Boards

    The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) is a foundation under civil law. It is accountable to and supported and advised by a board of trustees, an academic advisory board and a finance committee.

    Board of Trustees

    The board of trustees monitors the legality and efficiency of the institute’s work, including financial planning and financial reporting. It also appoints the president of the GIGA and the other members of the executive board.

    Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar is President of the GIGA. Her research focuses on international negotiations, economic statecraft, and multilateralism. She has a special interest in India, Asia, and the BRICS.
