  • For the launch of the International Affairs Centenary special issue “International relations: the ‘how not to’ guide”, Chatham House invites for a discussion with Prof. Drezner, Prof. Narlikar, and Prof. Rosoux on how policymakers and researchers can learn from the worst pitfalls.

The history of international affairs is littered with disastrous decisions at key moments. Different policy decisions and actions taken at the time might have led to a more peaceful and prosperous world. Whilst foreign policy analysis and debate usually seek to replicate successes, this event asks how to avoid catastrophic failure.

The International Affairs Centenary special issue, edited by Narlikar and Drezner, is a ‘how not to’ guide for international relations. It brings together 14 experts examining failures and providing suggestions on how to get some things right in the coming century. From the ‘go-to’ tool of diplomacy of economic sanctions to international negotiations, the panel will be exploring prominent historic case studies to address some of the most challenging questions:

    • Why do policymakers pursue decisions regardless of past results?

    • Would a ‘Hippocratic Oath’ for policy-minded professionals act as a buffer against bad decision-making?

    • How do policymakers go beyond this minimum ‘do no harm’ requirement?

    • What would constitute more effective interventions in the current international relations climate?

    Speakers:

Prof. Dr. Daniel W. Drezner is a Professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University .

Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar is President of the GIGA.

Prof. Dr. Valérie Rosoux is FNRS Research Director at UCLouvain.

    Moderator:

Hameed Hakimi is Associate Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Programme and Europe Programme, Chatham House.
