  • This talk reviews a series of lab-in-the-field experiments conducted with Syrian refugees in German and Jordanian refugee camps, and inside Syria. We analyze the effect of experience of flight, civil war violence, deprivation of economic and social foundation on basic socio-economic characteristics like altruism, risk taking, voluntary cooperation, the expected cooperation of others, and reciprocity. We explore the impact of experience of extreme violence on the integration strategies refugees apply in their new environment as well as their willingness to execute punishment themselves towards norm violators. Based on the findings, the long term perspectives of the Syrian society both inside and outside Syria in a potential post-conflict era are discussed.

Speaker: Andreas Nicklisch is Professor for Economics and Statistics at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons, Switzerland.
