  • In this seminar, Roselyn Hsueh shares findings from her new book, Micro-institutional Foundations of Capitalism: Sectoral Pathways to Globalization in China, India, and Russia (Cambridge University Press, 2022). Drawing on research in China, India, and Russia and examining sectors from textiles to telecommunications, the book introduces a new theory of sectoral pathways to globalization and development. Bridging materialist arguments with constructivism and historical institutionalism, the book's Strategic Value Framework shows how state elites perceive the strategic value of sectors in response to internal and external pressures and the impacts of sectoral structures and organization of institutions. The resultant dominant national and within country sectoral patterns of market governance shape development outcomes and firm-level behavior.
