    Why do warring parties enter negotiations during an ongoing war? This article builds on previous scholarship that has argued that the onset of wartime negotiations does not always exclusively represent a genuine will by belligerents to arrive at a settlement, but that alternative motives may also drive their decision to negotiate.

    Security Sector Reform and the Stability of Post-War Peace

    Security Sector Reform (SSR) is commonly defined as changes in the structure and conduct of those state institutions responsible for the prosecution and punishment of non-legal manifestations of violence: the military, police, and judiciary. Scholars and practitioners alike thereby see the process of SSR as one of the most vital elements for creating a stable post-war peace. The project investigates the conditions for this process.

    Institutions for Sustainable Peace - Comparing Institutional Options for Divided Societies and Post-Conflict Countries

    Two questions shape political agendas in violent and conflict affected societies: How can we stop the violence? And how can we prevent its recurrence? Comprehensive negotiated war terminations and external actors recommend and promote a set of institutional reforms (e.g., interim governments, power sharing, a substantial increase in political participation, and an accountable and democratically controlled security sector). This network project studies the success of particular institutional designs.
