Spotlight on … New Research Fellow Frauke Steglich

Frauke Steglich joined the GIGA as Research Fellow in November 2024. She has a PhD in Economics from Kiel University. Prior to joining the GIGA, she has worked as a researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. Get to know more about Frauke in this interview:

  • What is the focus of your research and what are you most looking forward to in this position at the GIGA? My research lies at the intersection of international and development economics, with a particular focus on how economic globalization can align with social responsibility. I am especially interested in how trade can serve not only as a catalyst for economic growth, but also as a strategic tool for promoting responsible business conduct and sustainable development. I am excited to be at GIGA and contribute to a research project that closely matches my academic interests. I look forward to working collaboratively with colleagues who bring deep regional expertise, and to engaging in a dynamic environment where interdisciplinary perspectives shape meaningful policy-oriented research. In what ways do you stay current with the skills required in your field of work? I engage with the academic community by attending conferences and seminars, organising or participating in research visits, and inviting colleagues for scholarly exchange. I also make it a priority to stay current with the latest research and methodological developments in my fields of interest. What would you like the impact of your research to be? I hope my research will contribute to a deeper understanding of how sustainability is governed in global supply chains—particularly how emerging regulations affect producers in developing countries. More broadly, I aim to generate empirical evidence that supports informed, effective policymaking at the intersection of trade, development, and sustainability. Qualitative or quantitative? Quantitative—I enjoy working with large data sets and uncovering patterns through empirical analysis. Big conference or small workshop? Small workshop—It is easier to connect with people and have in-depth discussions about research.
