    • Clara Franco Yáñez submitted her dissertation titled "Pathways to Dialogue: Mapping Norm Contestation in the Debate about Legal Abortion in Mexico from 2007 to 2021" at University of Hamburg. Congratulations!

    • Swantje Schirmer submitted her dissertation titled "Why do Regional Organisations Legitimate via Human Rights? Set-theoretic configurations of localisation, agents and audiences of legitimation" at Leuphana University Lüneburg. Congratulations!

    • Pedro Costa successfully defended his dissertation titled "The Overlooked Role of the Brazilian Congress in Shaping the Bolsa Família Program: A New Approach to the Policy-making of Conditional Cash Transfers" at Rio de Janeiro State University (IESP-UERJ). Congratulations!

    • Désirée Reder started her field work in Costa Rica. She will interview Nicaraguan activists, journalists and opposition members who had to leave Nicaragua due to the Repression. During her stay she is associated with the University of Costa Rica.

    • The International Studies Association (ISA) 2022 Annual Conference took place in Nashville and online from 28th March to 2nd April. Several of our doctoral researchers presented their research: Hana Attia, Rafael Castro, Niklas Krösche, Swantje Schirmer, and Juliana Tappe Ortiz. Topics included economic sanctions, human rights and peace agreements. The programme, including all contributions by GIGA scholars can be found here.

    • Juliana Tappe Ortiz and former GIGA collegue Lynda Chinenye Iroulo published a paper titled "Dear German Academia: What is Your Role in African Knowledge Production?" The paper can be read here.

    • Ardahan Özkan Gedikli attended the Historical Materialism Conference in Istanbul and presented his PhD dissertation in progress.

    • Jayane Maia edited together with Dr. Thaís Cavalcante Martins a Special Issue titled "Subnational Politics: An Emerging Research Agenda" that came out recently in the Brazilian journal Agenda Política. The articles on subnational politics in Latin America are in Portuguese, Spanish and English. The article can be read here.

    • We welcome a new visiting doctoral researcher, Luna Borges, who will stay with uns from 15th April - 15th July 2022. Luna is currently pursuing her PhD in law at the University of Brasília.
