GIGA nominates successfully Prof. Dr. Fernando Filgueira for Humboldt Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

The laureate, Professor at the Universidad de la República, has been nominated for this award by the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies and other globally networked scholars.

Author or editor of more than 10 books, 40 published academic articles, 40 book chapters and 20 reports for multilateral institutions and governments, Fernando Filgueira, Professor at the Universidad de la República (Uruguay), has shaped the field of study on social structure, social policy and welfare regimes in Latin America.

Filgueira is also currently working on a research project titled “Changing Families, Fathers, and the State in the Western World”, with Prof. Dr. Merike Blofield, Director of the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies.

She argues in her nomination: “My goal is to pursue a vision of fostering research excellence on the great global policy challenges that face Latin America and the world today. Applying for a Humboldt Research Award to bring Professor Filgueira to Germany is a central part of this. […] Filgueira and I plan to intensify our collaboration, which already includes two edited volumes and two book chapters, and to complete our co-authored book project ‘Changing Families, Fathers, and the State in the Western World’. Professor Filgueira and I will also work on building a tight cross-regional research network of scholars working on family policies. We are particularly excited about the possibility of building a base in Germany, given this country’s pioneering role (along with the Nordic countries) in promoting more active family policies, and the strong research community here on this topic."

The GIGA has offered to host Professor Filgueira during his research stay, with allocated office space, access to the Information Centre (IZ) and the overall infrastructure of the institute. Filgueira will be able to contribute to the research projects of many of the ILAS scholars and of those from the other regional institutes as well.

Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards to internationally leading researchers of all disciplines from abroad in recognition of their academic record to date.
