Since October 2014, Professor Dr. Amrita Narlikar has been the president of GIGA and a full professor at the University of Hamburg. Prior to taking up this position, she was Reader in International Political Economy, and also the Founding Director of the Centre of Rising Powers, University of Cambridge. She received her academic training at Oxford (M.Phil. and D.Phil. at Balliol), Jawaharlal Nehru University (M.A.), and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi (B.A. Hons). As a Junior Research Fellow at St. John’s College, Oxford, she also taught at Oxford University.

Prof. Narlikar’s expertise lies in the areas of international trade, globalization, multilateral negotiations, and rising powers (particularly India). Her research has been published in many international high-impact journals. She has 9 authored or edited books to her credit, published with Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Routledge, and others. Her most recent books were (co-edited) The Oxford Handbook on the World Trade Organization, and (co-authored) Bargaining with a Rising India: Lessons from the Mahabharata. She is currently working on a new book entitled The Poverty Paradox, under contract with Cambridge University Press.

Prof. Narlikar has always believed that even the ivory towers of academic learning must have firm foundations on the ground, and publicly-funded research in the social sciences must have an impact in the worlds of both academia and policy. In the past, her research on the World Trade Organization was used by trade negotiators from developing countries to improve their bargaining position via coalition formation. She served as a member of the first Warwick Commission on the reform of the multilateral trading system, where she helped develop ideas for reforming the WTO. She was invited to guest-edit a special issue of the Chatham House journal, International Affairs, on Negotiating the Rise of New Powers, which attracted considerable attention from both the scholarly and practitioner community. Her strong commitment to research-based policy exchange was one of the factors that attracted her to the GIGA, where she particularly enjoys engaging with policy-makers at the Federal Foreign Office and other relevant Federal and Länder ministries.
