Call for Proposals

Young African Scholar Award

The GIGA journal Africa Spectrum and the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, are inviting submissions for the third Young African Scholar Award.

The GIGA journal Africa Spectrum is calling for proposals for the third Young African Scholar Award, to be submitted by 30 September 2018. The journal invites submissions from current doctoral students and early-career researchers within five years of having been awarded their PhD, who are based at institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. The award-winning paper will be published in Africa Spectrum.

The Young African Scholar Award is a cooperation project between Africa Spectrum and the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Sharing a commitment to African capacity building in African Studies, the partner institutions established the first annual Young African Scholar Award in 2015.

Scholars who have been published under the auspices of the Young African Scholar Award will be granted a three-year affiliation with the Centre for Gender and Africa Studies at the University of the Free State as a Research Fellow (without remuneration) along with prize money of ZAR 5,000, sponsored by the university.
