All across the social sciences, researchers are going into the “field” to collect data for research projects and learn about the world. In this GIGA session, I will provide examples from my qualitative and quantitative research projects including data collection online and in person. The focus of this session is on ethics and security considerations and will give insights into practicalities and planning of your data collection. We will discuss recurring questions regarding ethics and security related to data collection and step-by-step go through how to plan your data collection including what to take, how to establish first contacts with research facilitators, how to organize the logistics, how to collect your data and how to handle bureaucratic and administrative requirements. The session will give ample room for exchange and discussion of your questions.
As a special guest, Hervé Akinocho founder of the Centre for Research and Opinion Polls from Lomé, Togo, will share his experiences of collecting data and join our discussions on ethics and security.

About the trainer:
Julia Köbrich is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for African Affairs. She studies issues at the intersection of peace research and social psychology. In her PhD, she addressed the question of how interreligious peace can be maintained and fostered.
