Research Platform Asia/India

The GIGA currently operates two research platforms in Asia. The Research Platform Asia benefits from our cooperation with the China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing, the University of Tokyo, and other partners in Japan – where the GIGA is represented by its Tokyo-based senior research fellow Dr Iris Wieczorek. Our aim is to intensify collaboration and exchange between academia, think tanks, the Federal Foreign Office, political foundations, and other partners within the region. Activities include joint academic conferences, workshops, and policy-oriented events as well as staff exchanges. The platform also allows us to explore new collaborations and establish new partnerships with other institutions in the wider Asia-Pacific. In recent years, we have thus co-organised policy-oriented exchanges and academic workshops in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Phitsanulok, Thailand; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Building on a long-standing, fruitful collaboration with the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) in Delhi, the GIGA Research Platform India facilitates our exchange with excellent scholars from India or working on India. Objectives include strengthening our networks among research institutions and think tanks in India, enabling joint research, and transferring knowledge about policy-relevant research results to decision makers and other relevant target groups.

The GIGA has agreed with its institutional cooperation partner in New Zealand, the University of Otago, to co-organise the 53rd Otago Foreign Policy School. The Foreign Policy School, which is devoted to the exchange of perspectives among scholars, diplomats and other practitioners, and the interested public on a given international-affairs subject, will be held in Dunedin in mid-2018.
