This 4-hour course provides a practical overview on concept formation and measurement in social sciences. Building on the participant’s topical interests, we will discuss different types of concepts as well as their use and usefulness for social science research. Moreover, we will discuss how we can operationalize and measure concepts properly. The course takes an applied perspective on the matter and makes use of participative, game-based learning tools to engage with the concepts at hand.
About the lecturer
After her Diploma in Latin American Studies Saskia Ruth-Lovell gained a PhD in Political Science from the University of Cologne, Germany. Saskia Ruth-Lovell taught at the Zurich University, Switzerland before she became a Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies (ILAS) in Hamburg. Her research focuses on r the impact of clientelism and populism on different facets of representative democracy in Latin America and beyond.
