This course provides an introduction into the topic of rising powers in world politics. It focuses on three main issues: first, it addresses the challenge of conceptualizing rising or emerging powers. Second, it traces some of the main IR debates on the topic of rising powers and their impact on international peace and stability, international organizations, and the liberal world order. Third, it addresses contemporary rising powers’ approach to selected issue areas of global governance. The course will include several interactive elements and group assignments. Course participants who work on related topics are encouraged to submit an abstract of their dissertation project in advance, so the course can be tailored to meet their research interests and take into account their expertise.
