    Taking Gerschenkron to the Field: Attitudes Towards Digitalization Hopes and Fears About the Future of Work in Ghana

    Hopes and fears surround digitalization's impact on work, especially in developing countries where labour markets differ from OECD contexts. How do people in these regions perceive digitalization? Drawing on a field experiment in Ghana, we uncover a pronounced optimism linked to the prospect of employment and productivity gains as well as leapfrogging old systems.

    The rapid diffusion of ICTs in Africa inspires both hopes and fears. This paper takes on the case of Ghana and uses micro-level survey data to investigate attitudes towards digitalization and the future of work as well as the reasons behind perceived optimism and pessimism.
