The MECAM Policy Talk 2025 brought together experts on and from the Maghreb as well as on and from Sub-Saharan Africa in Berlin for 2.5 days of intense deliberations. The blog article summarizes the main findings and presents central policy implications.

The article investigates the widespread assumption that socioeconomic marginalization helps explain the dynamics of radicalization, using the example of Islamist radicalization in Egypt and Tunisia after 2011. It develops a theoretical framework informed by social movement theory and, based on a comprehensive study of both academic publications and grey literature on the case studies published between 2011 and 2023, identifies key mechanisms linking socioeconomic factors and Islamist radicalization

Dieser Artikel untersucht zwei zentrale Aspekte institutionalisierter forschungsethischer Begutachtungsprozesse in Deutschland: (1) ihre Bedeutung für die Gestaltung ethischer Forschung und (2) die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen, mit Fokus auf den Sozialwissenschaften. Der Artikel formuliert konkrete Empfehlungen für die Stärkung der forschungsethisches Infrastruktur in Deutschland und die Förderung verantwortungsvoller und ethischer Forschungspraktiken in den Sozialwissenschaften.

This multilingual event was part of the Merian Family Meeting and offered two keynotes: “Decolonizing Knowledge in Times of Asymmetric Ignorance: On Counter-Mapping and Self-Indictments” (Manuela Boatcă) and “La ‘machine à décoloniser’: réflexions autour du geste décolonisateur” (Soumaya Mestiri).

The MECAM Policy Talk 2025 and side events connected academic insight with policy dialogue. It gathered experts and policymakers and examined Germany’s role in advancing South-South-North cooperation. A highlight was the 27 June roundtable, co-hosted with the German Africa Foundation (DAS).
