Regional and Local Responses to Global Refugee Movements: Contexts, Challenges, Solutions

Lecture | 16/09/2024 - 18/09/2024

  • The 5th conference of the Refugee Research Network brings together refugee and non-refugee researchers at all career levels, practitioners, students and interested parties. The global, regional and local contexts of flight and displacement will be examined, including the causes and trends that force people to be mobile, but also immobile.

GIGA Associate Prof. Dr. Tamirace Fakhoury will give the conference keynote sspeech.

GIGA researcher Dr. Christiane Fröhlich, spokesperson for the Network on Displacement Research, is delighted that mobility scholarships can be awarded for the first time this year. These scholarships, partly financed by the Innofonds of the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies and a DSF grant, will enable 40 people with experience of flight and/or without institutional support to take part in the conference.

Another highlight is the presentation of the new ethical guidelines for refugee research in Germany, which have been developed over the last two years in a participatory process together with the network board, network members, and external reviewers and discussants. These guidelines will be officially launched at the conference and will be available open access on the network website.

For the first time, the network is officially working with a refugee-led organisation, EU-COMAR, to organise the conference. In addition, journalists with refugee experience will document the conference and present their impressions at the closing event.

The conference will take place from 16 September to 18 September 2024 in Bonn.
