Sudan’s Army is at a Stalemate, and the Costs are Mounting

A year into the civil war in Sudan, the humanitarian costs have been staggering – but the news coverage has been minimal. A conflict on this scale should top the news agenda but it has been relegated to the back pages – in part – because of what is happening in Gaza and Ukraine. An interview with GIGA researcher Hager Ali.

One year on from the outbreak of another war, Sudan is being torn apart by one of the world's worst humanitarian crises in recent memory. More aid has been pledged, but many see no end to the suffering.

GIGA Researcher Hager Ali discussed her newly published study paper about "The War in Sudan: How Weapons and Networks Shattered a Power Struggle" with a particular focus on RSF- and SAF-dynamics.

In Sudan kämpfen die wichtigsten Sicherheitskräfte des Landes gegeneinander. Eine
schnelle militärische Entscheidung ist angesichts des relativ ausgeglichenen Kräfteverhältnisses zwischen den Sudanesischen Streitkräften (SAF) und den Rapid Support Forces (RSF) nicht zu erwarten. Durch dieses strategische Patt sind die Chancen auf eine erfolgreiche Vermittlung nicht ausweglos.

One of the main reasons for the slow processing of the visa applications of regular Sudanese people is the suspension and backlog of paperwork that resulted from the evacuation of diplomatic staff and internationals at the beginning of the clashes, Hager Ali said.

The conflict in Sudan affects the interests of many foreign powers. It’s not just the neighboring states that are trying to exert influence. The USA, China and Russia are also players – with different goals.
