The world is still not on track to meet the 1.5°C maximum warming target. The United States, China, the European Union, India, and Brazil – these “great powers” play a crucial role in fighting climate change. This GIGA Talk will address what has been achieved (or not) and how the “great powers” justify their respective actions or inaction.

The war in Gaza does not bode well for the EU and the US as it 1) disrupts Western infrastructure corridors, 2) distracts policymakers from China and Indo-Pacific strategies, and 3) undermines the West as the self-proclaimed upholder of the “rules-based order.”

The agenda for the UN Climate Change Conference foresees the conclusion of negotiations on implementation rules for the Paris Agreement and the setting of more ambitious targets by the parties. The authors analyse the requirements for a successful COP 26 in Glasgow.
