In Brief | 17/06/2024
Two GIGA researchers, Dr. Miriam Prys-Hansen and Dr. Thomas Richter, have been appointed honorary professors by the president of Leuphana University Lüneburg, Prof. Dr. Sascha Spoun. On 7 June 2024, Prof. Dr. Sarah Engler, Director of the Institute of Political Science (IPW), presented an official letter of appointment to each scholar.
Miriam Prys-Hansen and Thomas Richter will regularly teach courses in Leuphana’s new master’s programme “Public Affairs and Democracy”, develop research projects with members of the Institute of Political Science (IPW) and the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD), along with having a hand in the supervision of doctoral candidates. In a targeted way, this linkage further deepens the years-long successful cooperation between the GIGA and Leuphana. Prof. Dr. Miriam Prys-Hansen joined the GIGA’s Institute for Asian Studies in 2010 and has been heading up the GIGA’s “Global Orders and Foreign Policies” research programme since June 2020. Her work deals with global climate policy, the BRICS states and Indian foreign policy, along with the role of the Global South in international institutions. Prof. Dr. Thomas Richter has been a member of the GIGA’s Institute for Middle East Studies since 2008 and has led the GIGA’s “Accountability and Participation” research programme since 2022. His research covers political personalisation, the political economy of resource-rich states, and international influences on radicalisation in Germany.
