GIGA Refines Its Research Profile

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) announces its new research programmes.

The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) is enhancing its research profile. From now on, GIGA researchers will be tackling issues in the framework of the research programmes “Accountability and Participation,” “Peace and Security,” “Growth and Development,” and “Power and Ideas.” The research programmes supplement the institute’s expertise in its core regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and facilitate the comparative study of developments not only on the regional level but also on local and global levels.

“The GIGA stands for excellent interdisciplinary research. We work on topics that are of direct relevance for society as a whole. The importance and quality of our research was confirmed by the Leibniz Association’s evaluation of our institute. Our updated research structure will bring us even more in line with our own aspirations to investigate some of the most pressing political, economic, and social problems of our times, and to help find solutions to these problems,” says the GIGA’s president, Prof. Amrita Narlikar.

Within these research programmes, GIGA scholars investigate cross-cutting questions such as: How can developing countries counter climate change and simultaneously experience economic growth? What effect do sanctions have? What drives corruption and what can be done to fight it? To what extent do authoritarian regimes learn from one another, and what form does their collaboration take? The research programmes serve to bolster ongoing knowledge transfer.
