GIGA expert Christian von Soest appointed Honorary Professor at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen

Georg-August-Universität Göttingen appoints Dr. Christian von Soest as Honorary Professor. At the Department of Political Science, von Soest will teach on topics including international sanctions and interventions, EU foreign policy, as well as authoritarian regimes and their legitimation strategies.

    The President of the GIGA, Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar, and the entire team congratulate Prof. Dr. Christian von Soest on his appointment. On 14 March 2023, Prof. Dr. Andreas Busch, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, presented the certificate of appointment as Honorary Professor. With this professorship, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the GIGA are deepening their long-standing and excellent cooperation.

    “I am very much looking forward to working with colleagues and students at the Department of Political Science at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. My first seminar in Göttingen was already very enriching,” says von Soest. In the summer semester of 2023, he will lead a seminar discussing issues related to sanctions and other forms of international pressure.

    Prof. Dr. Christian von Soest has worked as a Research Associate at the GIGA since 2005; in the Berlin Office since 2009. Eight years ago, he took over as Head of the GIGA Research Programme “Peace and Security.” In addition to the impact of international sanctions and interventions, he researches authoritarian regimes, foreign and development policy, and governance in the Global South. His regional focus is on Southern Africa and East Africa.
