Book a Scientist – Your Questions to the Scientific Community

At “Book a Scientist,” interested parties have the chance to talk to an expert from the Leibniz Association for 25 minutes and ask everything they have always wanted to know about their favourite topic.

  • During this digital event on 3 June, three GIGA researchers will be available to discuss current issues in global politics. The talks will take place from 10:00–11:30 and from 16:00-17:30.

Democracies around the world find themselves under pressure: in many countries, governments are curbing press freedom and civil liberties, elections are being manipulated, and authoritarian leaders are on the rise. But why is this happening now? And how resilient are our own democratic institutions? Join Dr. David Kuehn in taking a closer look at these global trends  – a discussion for anyone who wants to better understand how our world is changing politically.

Looking for non-Western perspectives is in vogue. Critical engagement with them, however, remains limited. Dr. Sinan Chu will discuss how Chinese scholars develop indigenous International Relations theories and what international studies look like more broadly in today’s China. Chat with him about the challenges and implications of considering non-Western perspectives in IR and the Social Sciences.

Sanctions as a tool of economic coercion have become a key instrument of twenty-first-century international politics – being used to respond to violent conflicts, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, or human rights violations. Western countries reacted with remarkable speed and severity to Russia’s launching of its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine. In this talk, Prof. Dr. Christian von Soest will explore what international sanctions can achieve – and the risks they carry.
