Germs, Guns, and Rage: COVID-19 and Violent Conflict in the Global South

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Latin American countries particularly hard and exposed structural vulnerabilities in the region. At a joint workshop of the EU-LAC Foundation and the GIGA, scholars will assess key policy challenges in the areas of social protection, labour informality, education, health, state capacity, migration, and more.

The Peace and Security Research Programme analyses how identities and ideologies, institutional arrangements, and international interventions affect peace and conflict dynamics in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and investigates international violence and security trends.

The GIGA combines in-depth area expertise and cutting-edge comparative methods from the social sciences. The complementary interaction of four regional institutes and four cross-cutting thematic research programmes enables the GIGA to pursue its unique approach.

Large parts of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East are being very seriously affected by the disease, and the states of the Global South are showing a wide variation in their reactions. Learn more how the GIGA contributes to addressing the worldwide repercussions of the pandemic.

This article takes stock of the response of Latin American and Caribbean regional organizations to covid-19. In particular, it questions whether they have contributed to coping with the pandemic and seeks to find explanations for the considerable divergence between the responses of nine regional organizations.

How government policies on gender-based violence (GBV) are implemented in terms of services for victims varies considerably across countries. We examine policy infrastructures, including helplines, support centres, and shelters since the pandemic’s onset. Our project identifies progress and challenges around the provision of services for GBV survivors.
