The BRICS states will meet from 6 to 7 July for their 17th summit, drawing global attention amid rising geopolitical tensions and shifting international alignments. While the group has had notable moments – such as the launch of the New Development Bank in 2015 – its overall impact on the global system remains uncertain. Under Brazil’s presidency, priorities include health, trade, climate change, and AI cooperation, and new initiatives to inform COP30 are being developed.
What’s next for the group, and can it shape the global agenda? BRICS summits have been known to defy expectations, as seen in the surprise expansions of the group membership in 2023 and 2024 – and this year may prove no different. Our post-summit panel will bring together BRICS experts from around the world to assess the outcomes, offering analysis that goes beyond headlines to explore the group’s evolving role in global affairs.
Speakers: Mihaela Papa, PhD, is Director of Research and Principal Research Scientist at the MIT Center for International Studies.

Dr. Damyana Bakardzhieva is a Senior Research Fellow at the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy.
