Brazil: Crisis and Games

With the suspension of President Dilma Rousseff in May 2016, the Brazilian state crisis reached its peak. Interim President Michel Temer and a significant proportion of his transitional cabinet, as well as the majority of parliamentary representatives and senators, are suspected of corruption. The country is also experiencing a major economic crisis. And finally, numerous big-name athletes have cancelled their plans to participate in the Olympic Games due to the Zika virus. How can Brazil’s collapse from a global power to a crisis state be explained? The domestic and foreign policy causes as well as possible consequences of the current events will be the focus of the next GIGA Forum.
