"Leave No One Behind": Impulse aus Wissenschaft und Praxis für eine neue Afrikapolitik Deutschlands

Date

29/11/2018

Start

02:00 p.m. (CET)

  • The German federal government has increasingly taken Africa into focus, and so for a year now has been implementing a number of related new policy initiatives. Alongside the Marshall Plan with Africa of the BMZ and the G20 Compact with Africa, the focus is currently on the revision of Germany’s Africa policy guidelines. The federal government is hereby establishing anew the country’s Africa policy, and formulating a fresh strategy approach. In this, private investment in Africa is envisaged as taking a central role – the Compact as well as the recent investment conference held together with 11 African heads of state and government in Berlin clearly demonstrate this to be the case.

In the various expert discussions, we want to identify and discuss the necessary prerequisites and steps for the sustainable development of sub-Saharan Africa – including in rural areas, challenging contexts, and in strong growth centres too. How can we best combat hunger and poverty in rural areas, and ensure that there is adequate nutrition available for everyone? How can rewarding jobs be created through economic development, and how can we guarantee that the desired investments abide by employment standards, respect human rights, and mitigate their environmental impact too?

We will provide insights from science as well as from policy practice regarding the sustainable development of Africa, via leading experts coming from research, business, civil society and federal government circles. We will discuss the conclusions and recommendations for the new Africa strategy of the German federal government, and together with its representatives look more closely at the further development of the country’s Africa policy guidelines.
