The Toddler in Chief: What Donald Trump Teaches Us about the Modern Presidency

With the upcoming US presidential elections, the GIGA is proud to bring to you the author of The Toddler in Chief: What Donald Trump Teaches Us about the Modern Presidency. Inspired by his viral twitter thread #ToddlerinChief, Prof. Daniel Drezner offers an assessment of over 1,000 tweets from White House insider sources on President Trump’s actions. He draws on these examples to analyse the impact the Trump administration has on US democracy and foreign policy. The book deliberates lasting effects as well as – more fundamentally – the powers of the presidency. While written before the coronavirus crisis, the thesis on Trump’s behaviour also explains much of the federal government’s disastrous response to the pandemic.

Prof. Dr. Daniel W. Drezner is a Professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a regular contributor to The Washington Post. Prior to Fletcher, he taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has held positions with the Civic Education Project, the RAND Corporation and the US Department of the Treasury, and received fellowships from the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Council on Foreign Relations, and Harvard University. His book, The Toddler in Chief: What Donald Trump Teaches Us about the Modern Presidency, has been published by University of Chicago Press in March 2020.

In conversation with Andreas Cichowicz has been Editor-in-Chief Television at the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR – Northern German Broadcasting) since 2004 and is responsible for information programmes on NDR and ARD. He is one of the presenters of the magazine “Weltspiegel” and ARD news and election programmes. On 3 November 2020, he will be moderating the eight-hour live coverage “Amerika wählt” (“America Votes”) on national public-service broadcaster Das Erste, reporting on the US presidential elections.

The audience will have the opportunity to engage in the discussion.

Begrüßung Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar (GIGA-Präsidentin)
