Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Anika Oettler (Marburg University) and Prof. Dr. Sabine Kurtenbach (GIGA), García Pinzón completed her doctoral thesis, entitled Order, Violence, and Trajectories of Governance in Peripheral Cities of Colombia and El Salvador, in February 2022. The examination board awarded the thesis the distinction of summa cum laude. Receiving special praise were the work’s high quality, the originality of its research design, and its theoretical and empirical contributions to our understanding of state violence, one of the biggest challenges for development and sustainable peace in North and South America. The research was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the GIGA, and the Marburg University Research Academy (MARA). For her work, Viviana García Pinzón received the Christiane Rajewsky Prize in March 2023. Each year, in memory of peace researcher Prof. Christiane Rajewsky, the German Association for Peace and Conflict Studies gives out one award each for a master’s thesis and a doctoral dissertation that make outstanding contributions to peace and conflict research. The sum awarded for each prize is €1,250. The GIGA’s President, Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar, and the entire GIGA team congratulate Viviana on her achievement. Viviana García Pinzón was a member of the GIGA Doctoral Programme until 2022. Today, she works as a Senior Researcher at the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute.

COVID-19 and the Dynamics of (Post-)War Violence: Lessons from Colombia and Syria

What are the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the dynamics of violence during and after civil wars? The project analyses the pandemic-related reconfiguration of social and political orders in a comparative study of Syria and Colombia at subnational levels. In this way, it will provide new knowledge on violence dynamics in two of the most complex conflicts today and be able to suggest crucial lessons for similar (post-)war contexts in other parts of the world.
