The GIGA is headed by the president, who is assisted by the executive board. The research council develops the institute’s research direction. Management responsibilities are comprehensively defined in the GIGA’s charter.
Prof. Dr. Amrita Narlikar is President of the GIGA and Professor of International Relations at the University of Hamburg. She is also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
The executive board consists of the president, the vice president, the directors of the regional institutes and the head of finances and administration.
This body strategically guides the entire institute, coordinates the GIGA’s work and advises on the allocation of financial resources. The executive board is also responsible for all matters concerning human resources development.
The research council advises on the institute’s research direction, discusses theme development and works out the research plan. It assists the executive board in research and personnel strategies.
The research council is composed of the president, the vice president, the directors of the regional institutes, the heads of the research programmes, the research manager and the academic director of the GIGA Doctoral Programme.
