Climate Obstruction and Foreign Policy in Comparative Perspective

The fight against climate change continues to be hindered by campaigns of corporate and other actors who seek to prevent global and/or national action on climate change. This research group is set up to a joint and comparative research agenda on climate obstruction in and across key Global South countries. The lead institutions are the GIGA and the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

Globalisation, Europe & Multilateralism – Sophistication of the Transnational Order, Networks, and European Strategies (GEM STONES)

The rapid rise in the number of international institutions increases the complexity of the global system. Does this complexity strengthen or weaken the EU's capacity to interact with the world? This is the core question in GEM-STONES, an integrated research and PhD fellowship programme of 15 European institutions, coordinated by the Université Libre de Bruxelles. The two early stage researchers who stay at the GIGA study regional integration processes and regional security governance.

The Institutional Presidency in Latin America

This project analysed the development of the institutional Presidency in Latin America after the processes of re-democratisation in the 1980s. The Institutional Presidency (IP) refers to the bulk of agencies that directly support the chief of the executive in his/her governing tasks. The IP is part of the "executive toolbox" that is available to heads of state for building legislative majorities. Our analysis highlighted the strategic redesign of the bureaucratic structures of the presidential office initiated by presidents.

Anti-Corruption Policies Revisited. Global Trends and European Responses to the Challenge of Corruption

Which factors promote or hinder the development of effective anti-corruption policies? This was the guiding question of the ANTICORRP consortium, led by the University of Gothenburg. In this framework, the GIGA comparatively analysed country cases in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East and studied patterns and trends of corruption within each of the four regions.
