This paper disentangles the specific patterns of repression that was employed in Morocco during the 2011-12 protests, challenging the narrative of a benign and reform-based response to the Arab uprisings.

The panel organized and chaired by Maria Josua challenged simplistic assumptions about Morocco by analyzing recent dynamics such as protest policing, shedding critical light on green development policies and the new social protection agenda, and the kingdom's increasingly assertive foreign policy.

After the Arab uprisings, Tunisia would emerge as the only Arab democracy. President Kais Saied’s July 2021 coup has, however, led to the autocratisation of the state. This GIGA Focus traces Saied’s base of support, his strategies, and rhetoric, as well as their implications for Tunisia’s future.

Maria Josua and Mirjam Edel discussed their well-received article, “The Arab uprisings and the return of repression,” published in Mediterranean Politics, with Prof. Marc Lynch, director of the Project on Middle East Political Science. 

The article highlights the recent increase in repression in Algeria. Dr. Maria Josua classifies arbitrary court sentences against human rights activists.
