Populism and Foreign Policy: The Case of India

Since Bolsonaro took office in January 2019, Brazil and Germany have been positioned in opposing camps on climate change, migration, and human rights policies. The authors of this GIGA Focus analyse Brazilian–German relations, that have not been more distant since the Brazilian military dictatorship.

In this book, Prof. Sandra Destradi and GIGA-researcher Johannes Plagemann develop a novel theory of populism and foreign policy. The use of foreign policy for domestic mobilization and the personalization of decision making are key to explain different intensities of foreign policy change.
