New Editor of the GIGA Journal "Africa Spectrum"

From April 2022, GIGA researcher Dr. Tim Glawion will take over as acting editor of the GIGA journal Africa Spectrum. He succeeds the GIGA’s Dr. Julia Grauvogel, who previously oversaw the journal, which is published three times a year. Leonardo R. Arriola of the University of California, Berkeley remains co-editor.


  • Dr. Tim Glawion has been working as a Research Fellow at the GIGA Institute for African Studies since 2018. Meanwhile, he has also been a research advisor to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and the aid organisation Cordaid, among others. At the GIGA, his research focuses on security issues and the restoration of the state monopoly on the use of force in the Central African Republic, Lebanon, and Somalia. He is currently working on the research project “The Monopoly on the Use of Force and Paradoxes of Security – Discrepancies between Objective and Subjective Security in the Central African Republic and Lebanon.” Starting in March, he will provide his expertise to Africa Spectrum, taking over the editorship of the journal together with Leonardo R. Arriola from the University of California, Berkeley. The GIGA would like to thank Dr. Julia Grauvogel, who has co-edited the journal for the past four years, for her successful stewardship of Africa Spectrum. Africa Spectrum is part of the GIGA Journal Family and is published in cooperation with SAGE. As an Open Access publication, it is available online free of charge. It is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to research on the politics, society, and economics of sub-Saharan Africa. As a multidisciplinary journal, Africa Spectrum welcomes submissions drawing on a variety of different theoretical and methodological approaches. In addition to original research articles, the journal publishes analytical reports and book reviews. The journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

    GIGA Journal Family

    Excellent contributions by researchers from all over the world are featured in the four journals. The GIGA Journal Family is published by SAGE Publishing, maintaining the platinum standard of the open access model.

    GIGA Institute for African Affairs

    The GIGA Institute for African Affairs analyses political and socio-economic developments in sub-Saharan Africa. Political institutions, violent conflicts, as well as a variety of socio-economic challenges form the thematic core. The aim of the research is to paint a nuanced picture of sub-Saharan Africa.

    This issue of Africa Spectrum explores Africa's role in international politics. Among other topics, it examines Tanzania's peace and security policy, the West African Health Organisation, and Africa’s position in climate negotiations.
