Middle East and Islam Expert Udo Steinbach Has Passed Away
GIGA mourns the loss of Dr. Udo Steinbach.
From 1976 to 2006, Udo Steinbach headed the German Orient Institute, which was then part of the German Overseas Institute (DÜI, now GIGA). He later served as Director of the GIGA Institute for Middle East Studies until the end of 2007, making him a member of the GIGA’s Executive Board. He remained an important voice on Middle East and Islamic affairs, including through his media presence.
According to Deutschlandfunk, Udo Steinbach passed away on 2 August at the age of 82. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.
