Latin America Researchers Sharing Research Findings at LASA 2023

    Prof. Dr. Bert Hoffmann delved into Cuba’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic with his presentation titled “Opting for autonomy: Cuba’s strategy of domestic COVID-19 vaccine development – a preliminary balance.”  

    Indi-Carolina Kryg’s study, “Immigrated People’s Challenging and Resisting Practices in Monterrey: Reconceptualizing Political Behavior,” focused on the experiences of immigrant populations in Monterrey, Mexico. By examining their political behaviours, encountered challenges, and acts of resistance, Kryg offered an alternative perspective on political engagement.

    The role of Latin American courts in shaping democratic societies came under comparative scrutiny with Prof. Dr. Mariana Llanos’s presentation titled “Latin American Courts Going Public: A Comparative Survey Assessment of Eight Democracies.”

    Valeria Morales examined the factors influencing Central American countries’ COVID-19 vaccination campaigns, highlighting the unique challenges and successes met with in the region. At LASA 2023, she presented her research titled “Un pequeño territorio con diversidad de desempeños: explicando la vacunación contra COVID-19 en Centroamérica.” 

    Lastly, Johanna Pieper, along with Nancy Madera and Merike Blofield, offered valuable insights into the fight against gender-based violence in the region with their presentation, “From Plans to Policies: Assessing Government Efforts to Address Violence against Women in Support and Protection Services in Nine Latin American Countries.”  

    The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) is the largest professional association in the world for individuals and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America. Every year, Latin America specialists gather at the LASA International Congress to foster academic exchange and dialogue. With their participation, GIGA researchers contribute to the understanding of the complex challenges in the region, deepen interdisciplinary collaboration, and provide valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners alike.
