The 2018 Malaysian general election takes the spotlight in the latest special issue of the GIGA Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs (JCSAA), which analyses Malaysia’s regime change, Prime Minister Mahathir’s return to power, and the crucial factors in the election contest.

To mark the publication of the special issue, the ideas and arguments developed by the respective authors were presented in Malaysia itself. Malaysian foreign minister Dato' Saifuddin bin Abdullah paid tribute to JCSAA with a keynote speech. The event, which took place in late January, was organised by the Jeffrey Cheah Institute on Southeast Asia at Sunway University, Malaysia.

The JCSAA editorial team, Prof Dr Andreas Ufen and PD Dr Marco Bünte, was supported in publishing this special issue by Prof Bridget Welsh of John Cabot University and Prof James Chin, director of the Asia Institute Tasmania at the University of Tasmania.
