This past week, the GIGA honoured 11 graduates of the institute’s own Doctoral Programme. These up-and-coming scholars covered a broad spectrum of research in their dissertations, with topics ranging from the effectiveness of international sanctions in African countries, to the decarbonisation of economic growth, to youth gangs in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia.

At the lively ceremony, GIGA Vice President Patrick Köllner highlighted the great value of the Doctoral Programme for the research institute, saying to the graduates, “Thank you for enriching the GIGA academically and socially. The doctoral students contribute greatly to publications, knowledge transfer, and the everyday life within the institute.”

The GIGA Doctoral Programme offers younger scholars from Germany and abroad a platform from which to advance their research and their scholarly careers – particularly in the area of Comparative Area Studies. The next application period begins in January 2018. Further information about the GIGA Doctoral Programme.
