Prof. Jagdish N. Bhagwati will deliver the inaugural lecture of the GIGA Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series. He will speak on "Trade Issues Today: WTO, Transatlantic and Transpacific Agreements". The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) has created this lecture series to bring the best and brightest minds in academia and policy from all over the world to Hamburg to stimulate public exchange on key global developments.

Hamburg’s First Mayor Olaf Scholz will welcome Prof. Bhagwati and guests on 25 June 2015 at 5 p.m. at the Hamburg City Hall.

In his lecture, Prof. Bhagwati will provide a unique multi-layered and incisive analysis of the Doha Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations as well as regional trade initiatives including TTIP and TPP. Jagdish Bhagwati is Professor of Economics and Law at Columbia University. He is widely regarded as being amongst the world’s most influential thinkers and has won international acclaim for his pioneering and impactful expertise on world trade.

“The goal of the GIGA Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series is to contribute to intellectual exchange and research excellence as an integral and inspiring part of Hamburg’s public life,” says GIGA President Prof. Amrita Narlikar. “We are honoured and excited at the prospect of our series being inaugurated by the eminent Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati.” The second lecture of the series will follow on 26 June 2015: leading Russia expert Prof. Padma Desai will speak at the GIGA on “Putin and Russia in Historical Perspective.”
