Professor Andreas Mehler, GIGA board member and director of the GIGA Institute for African Affairs (IAA), left the GIGA. He is now the director of the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute in Freiburg.
“The GIGA and I personally are grateful to Professor Mehler for his long years of commitment and service to the Institute,” said GIGA president Professor Amrita Narlikar. “He will be greatly missed here, but we look forward to continuing our collaborations with him in his new function.”
Professor Robert Kappel, GIGA president emeritus and a senior research fellow at the Institute, also praised Mehler’s engagement: “For 26 years, Andreas Mehler undertook research on and in Africa at the GIGA/DÜI in Hamburg. He produced outstanding and widely read publications and was also an important advisor on German and European Africa policy.”
The acting director of the IAA is Apl. Professor Jann Lay. “I am delighted that Professor Jann Lay has agreed to step into this important role,” said Professor Narlikar. “We are sure that the IAA will continue to do the excellent research that it stands for, and will continue to flourish under his leadership.”
