Call for Applications: MECAM Long-Term Fellowships 2023–2026


  • The Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) invites applications for three long-term fellowships for postdoctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences for the period from September 2023 to August 2026. Under the overall theme “Imagining Futures: Dealing with Disparity”, MECAM offers applicants a choice of five interdisciplinary and interrelated ‘Interdisciplinary Research Fields’ (IRFs): 

    • Aesthetics and Cultural Practice

    • Inequality and Mobility

    • Memory and Justice

    • Resources and Sustainability

    • Identities and Beliefs (under GIGA's coordination)

    Applications should be related to at least one of the IRFs. This call for applications is open to researchers from all countries, including Tunisia.

    MECAM has been established at the Université de Tunis/Tunisia in October 2020 to strengthen internationalisation, free academic research and cooperation in the humanities and social sciences in, with and across the Maghreb, and other regions of the world. The German Institute for Global and Area Studies is a partner within the MECAM consortium, along with the University of Marburg, the University of Leipzig and the Forum Transregional Studies in Berlin. In addition to the Université de Tunis, the regional partners are the University of Sfax and the Institut Tunisien des Études Stratégiques (ITES) in Tunisia, as well as other partners from Morocco and Lebanon.

    Merian Center for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM): Imagining Futures - Dealing with Disparity, Phase I

    The "Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb" (MECAM), founded in 2020, is a platform for regional and international scientific exchange in Tunisia based on the central theme "Imagining Futures - Dealing with Disparity". The centre is located at the renowned Université de Tunis in the Tunisian capital. Its research work focuses on the effects of multidimensional disparity on models, visions and ideas about political, social, economic, and cultural futures.
