Policy Advice

Advising is a cross-sectoral responsibility for all GIGA scholars. Based on their research, they inform political decision makers not only of new developments and challenges in the study regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, but also of global issues such as the rise of new regional powers. The GIGA offers thorough background information for current and strategic decisions, independent assessments of practical policies, and new courses of action for decision makers.

The GIGA primarily advises:

  • at the national level in the executive branch – the Federal Foreign Office (FFO), the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as well as its executive organs the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Bank for Reconstruction (KfW), the Chancellor’s Office, and other ministries such as the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Economics and Technology;
  • at the national level in the legislature – members of the German Parliament, especially those on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committees on Economic Cooperation and Development, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, and Defence;
  • at the state level in the executive branch – the Hamburg Senate Chancellery and the Ministry of Science, Research, Equalities and Districts.

The GIGA provides its expertise to political decision makers in a variety of ways, such as:

Civic Education

The GIGA is also involved in the Foreign Office’s international diplomatic training as well as the GIZ’s training programme for foreign professionals and executives. Moreover, GIGA researchers regularly collaborate with the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb). They also prepare concepts and write articles for special issues and the journal Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte (APuZ).
