Latin America: The Military Makes a Comeback

In Brazil, a president who glorifies the military dictatorship and a general as vice president; in Guatemala, officers looming menacingly in the background after the government announces the end of the International Commission against Impunity; in Argentina, plans to deploy the country’s armed forces in domestic conflict situations - in Latin America, the military is openly intervening in politics once more. The continent seems to be on its way back to a past that many thought had been firmly left behind.

In this GIGA Talk, we discuss the role of the military in Latin America against the backdrop of the most recent developments in different countries of the region. What lies behind the military's comeback? What does it mean for democracy and human rights in the region? Can the renewed militarisation of Latin America be prevented?

Speakers: Prof. Dr. Sabine Kurtenbach is the acting director of the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies. Dr. Adam Scharpf is a research fellow at the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies.

Moderator: Prof. Dr. Bert Hoffmann is a senior research fellow at the GIGA Institute for Latin American Studies and head of the GIGA Berlin Office.
