The GIGA Talk “Can citizens living abroad count on their countries of origin? Emigrant policies from 22 Latin American and Caribbean States” will discuss how Latin American and Caribbean states reach out to their emigrants. This includes a consideration of economic policies – such as remittances, citizenship, and suffrage policies that extend to emigrants special representation in parliaments of their states of origin – and of the cultural policies through which those states promote culture and language amongst generations of their citizens born abroad.
The event will also feature a book launch for Emigrant Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean, the result of a three-year research project conducted at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). This volume provides the most comprehensive assessment of emigrant policies in 22 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to date. It will help practitioners compare and contrast emigrant policies in the region and learn more about other countries’ practices in this context.
