In the lead-up to the eighth BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit in October, the group of “rising powers” is facing significant challenges: Political and economic crises are limiting the majority of the member states’ foreign policy capacity. Rivalries within the group, particularly between China and India, are making cooperation difficult.
The GIGA Forum will examine the perspectives of the individual BRICS states and the overall expectations of the summit in Goa, as well as possible prospects for the future. The participating researchers will show not only that the centrifugal tendencies within the BRICS group are very strong, but also that they differ very significantly from policy field to policy field.
