  • For many years, Cuba and Iran suffered politically and economically under international sanctions. The new policy of rapprochement, being pursued most notably by the United States, could lead to profound changes in both Cuba and Iran. Does this represent a long overdue accommodation from the West?

Sanctions are some of the most debated instruments of domestic foreign policy and global governance policy. At this GIGA Forum, experts will discuss the effects of sanctions on Cuba and Iran and consider whether the intended goals of these sanctions were actually achieved. The backdrop that led to the sanctions being lifted will also be examined.

Speaker: Henner Fürtig is the director of the GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies. His research focuses on the restructuring of regional order in the Middle East as well as the potential and limitations of leading powers in the region, such as Egypt, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.

Bert Hoffmann is a senior research fellow and head of the GIGA Berlin Office. His work concentrates on relations between the EU and Latin America as well as Cuba’s political transformation.

Christian von Soest is the head of GIGA Research Programme 2, Violence and Security. His work focuses on comparative research on both international sanctions and authoritarian regimes.

Moderation: Johannes von Dohnanyi is a journalist and author. As a long-time foreign correspondent, he has extensive experience covering international relations.
